Why I'm voting for McCain

You've probably never seen me post anything vaguely political here; I loathe confrontation, and I know most of my flist are quite liberal, so I keep my mouth shut.

I believe wholeheartedly that Obama will do everything in his power to put all of his plans into place. He's been very clear about wanting to create a huge government, and he'll do it. I don't think that people will benefit from having things done for them; we have to do it for ourselves.

I don't see how Obama's plans are ever going to be paid for -- he keeps bringing up how he'll go through the budget line by line, and cut what doesn't work. The President doesn't have a line-item veto.

Frankly, I don't think either McCain or Obama are the right man for the job. Neither has had the balls to stand up and say "The American people have overspent for years, and it's time to stop. Your role model leading you to this point has been the US Government -- we've overspent for years and not been saving. It's time to stop." We NEED to stop spending beyond our means. But what we all WANT is for someone to put his arm around us and tell us that it's all going to be okay, which is what Obama's been doing. It feels better to be told that, than it does to be told that things suck, and it's going to hurt getting out of this.

Do I think that the President is solely responsible for the work of the government? No. Do I think McCain's proposal to freeze spending will be more beneficial than Obama's expensive plans, not one of which he will entertain the notion of cutting? Yes. I don't think McCain will be elected, barring a major upheaval in the next three weeks. But I will vote for him. And regardless of who is elected, I have hope that we'll be better off in four years than we are right now.

Exactly

Do not vote for Obama!

McCain isn't the greatest candidate, but I worry about America 10 years from now if Obama gets elected. You won't know the full effect of his bs for that long. Just like a lot of the Bill Clinton plan is starting to catch up with us now.

Holy anonymous commenters that searches for keywords, Batman!

egardless of who is elected, I have hope that we'll be better off in four years than we are right now.

I think you're right about that. :)

You should feel free to talk about any subject you want on your LJ - even if it's not the "popular" side of it. Boogers on anyone who gives you a 'tude for expressing your opinion.

What she said.

As an undecided (beyond Delores for President), I'm interested in hearing about the issues, and what each party wants to do. That includes points as you make above.

Thank you for sharing your opinion.

I applaud you for having thought out reasons (instead of knee jerk reasons) for voting a particular way. I wish that everyone who will vote in the election thinks about why they are voting the way they are and not base it simply on telemarketing calls for (or against) a referendum; political ads (which are almost by definition going to be biased), etc..

Anyone who can be elected president should on no account be given the job. -- Douglas Adams (probably misquoting) but I think you get my point.

You shouldn't ever feel like you can't say what you think, lady. The fact that you and I are politically polar opposites and yet still such good friends I would hope can ease your mind a bit when you have something you want to say. :)

I am about to post an article that I was going to link to before I saw this post of yours -- it is NOT directed at you nor trying to change your mind at all, but I DO think it is highly illuminating reading and hope you'll check it out. <3.

Neither has had the balls to stand up and say "The American people have overspent for years, and it's time to stop. Your role model leading you to this point has been the US Government -- we've overspent for years and not been saving. It's time to stop."

Actually, Obama said something similar last night.

As for being 'liberal'? I'm non-party affiliated and I've mentioned before that I like hearing opinions that differ from mine... just sayin'...

I too have very liberal leanings when it comes to the social agenda, but I also have strongly held fiscally conservative opinions. I've been told I a type of whacked out libertarian, and a bleeding heart liberal. So I don't call myself anything but an independent.

But beyond my political leanings, I want discourse, not assertions that one or another is wrong or lies...I want reasoned discourse...

And I think we all want a leader who will think things through and work to create a better economy and country for the next four years.

America was never supposed to be a party system, much less one where each party refuses to admit that the other party's candidate might have a good point or two. The whole election process annoys me to no end and seems to go on forever.

Of course you should feel free to state your position in your blog. Otherwise it's some kind of audience-driven safe zone. Good for you!

I usually find myself having to vote against someone rather than for someone, which is very disheartening. I don't like either candidate much (I was a Hillary supporter), but I feel compelled to vote against McCain because of some of the big non-economic portions of his platform. And he deserves a knock on the head for using the term "pro-abortion" in the debate, since there is probably no one in the world who is "pro-abortion" and he just says it to rile people up.

Faith, thanks for sharing your thoughts. One of the things that has been annoyng me lately is that folks don't tend to exchange ideas; it's all bombastic headbashing; which keeps us from the real issues. Obama isn't a foreign Muslim who will poison our children. MacCain isn't one arguement away from a seisure. They both know how to say nuclear, and they both know why it's important to say it right.

P.S. "Anonymous" is a coward.

I agree that many of your flist members are liberal, but I believe many of us are also tolerant of varied beliefs and veiws. :)

All the candidates have both good points and bad. They're people, just like the rest of us, and imperfect. But in their case, their shortcomings and failings get hung out for all to see.

Glad you posted this. I and all of my closest IRL friends are all planning to vote for Obama in two and a half weeks, so it's great to hear someone who has a thought out opinion for voting the other way lay it out like this. I appreciate it.

I'm glad you're calling it like you see it, totally. I really thought the world of McCain once upon a time ago, I guess I'm just worried about who is pulling his strings at this point. The whole VP thing made me uncomfortable.

[identity profile] cozit.livejournal.com 2008-10-17 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
That was one of the top reasons I'd planned to look at McCain a bit more closely... around June/July. I'm still looking at both, and honestly can't vote "for" either, both bug me one way or another too much... right now McCain is the bigger bug... but you never know what will happen as comparison continues.

And hey, if no one ever posts something different than the "common" thought, it doesn't inspire to take a second look... and second looks are generally always a good thing to take before leaping to anything.

You're the only one who can speak your own mind. :) I like knowing why you're voting for him -- and for what it's worth, I agree about Obama spending like a crazy man.

We all can only do what we feel we must, you know? It'll all work out.

[identity profile] elizagoth.livejournal.com 2008-10-17 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I consider myself an ideological libertarian, and have since early 1994.

I've been doing a lot of reading, comparisons and validations, particularly over the last few weeks. If an article isn't cited, I don't bother with it.

McCain will have my vote as well.
