Tired and numb
Apr. 24th, 2006 07:06 pmAll day Saturday and Sunday, Dana and I had PHTLS (pre-hospital trauma life support) training -- we both passed and will be receiving our little certification cards soon. Sunday night we hightailed it back to the squad for duty, and Dana and I were a crew of 2 at our South station from 6 to midnight. During that time we had two calls, both of which went to the least accessible hospital (you can get there from here, but it involves a tesseract and a donkey), one of which required me to go about 25 mph the whole way, and both requiring lifting. My back hurt after the first call, and when it came to the lifting portion of the second, I managed to hurt my back some more.
I went to see our doctor this afternoon (which I was planning to do, because I've had numbness/tingling in the fourth and fifth fingertips of my left hand for about three weeks, and after learning that area is controlled by the nerve between the cervical and thoracic spine, I decided it wasn't just something I slept on funny). For the back pain, she prescribed a 3x daily dose of my magic muscle relaxant, which works nicely and doesn't screw up my brain. She also wrote me a scrip for an x-ray of my spine -- she thinks it's either spinal problems OR carpal tunnel, neither of which thrill me. Tomorrow I'll go out for the x-ray and get a brace for my wrist just in case, and we'll take it from there.
Carpal tunnel was always the syndrome which must not be named to me -- I was terrified of it as a secretary, and although I don't type nearly as many documents from scratch as I used to, I'm on a keyboard an awful lot.
Hmm. It's just 7:00pm, and I should get some food. Didn't sleep awfully well last night at the squad (never do), and the nap I took when we got home wasn't really enough. No idea what to eat, mind you, but I should eat something. Perhaps some garlic cream pasta and an unhealthy amount of crap television, followed by some ice cream. :) (yes, my nutritionists, that's carbs and fat followed by MORE carbs and fat, so's we're clear. it's not as appetizing as say, fried starch covered in fat and nitrites with a side bowl of fat to dip them in, like my once-favorite Texas Cheese Fries at Longhorn, but it'll do.) :)
