Happy choir news!
Dec. 22nd, 2004 12:01 pm(for a change!)
Last Friday, we had our first rehearsal for Christmas, and due to holidays and stuff, we had 3 men (including the director, Doug), and 5 women, all of whom were sopranos. I asked Doug if he'd like me to pinch hit on alto, and another woman (who mercifully sings well) volunteered as well. That left 3 sopranos, none of whom are particularly strong or for that matter, on key. Barbara and I divvied up the alto part when it split, and blended nicely together. We got to restore a bunch of accidentals and chord notes that otherwise would have been all unison on melody, which felt great.
There was another rehearsal Saturday which I missed due to travel. I called Doug today to see whether our altos had shown up at the Saturday rehearsal, and whether he needed me back on the soprano lines, so I would know what music to study. He said that I sounded really great on alto and he needs a strong voice there, so I should stay.
AND, he asked me to do the schola parts, because I'm a good reader. I had to ask him what that meant -- there are parts of the Mass sung by the cantor (usually him at the moment), some marked "schola" and some with the entire choir. Basically, he's separating his strongest voices and having us sit to his left and sing harder parts, and then the entire choir will sing the easier stuff.
Woohoo!
